Park it in Garner for Some Outdoor Fun

If you like hiking, biking, and exploring the outdoors, Garner, North Carolina, is a great place to be. The town, nestled just outside of the capital city of Raleigh, is an ideal place to get outside and explore nature through its vast park system. There are lots of things to do in this suburban spot, which is growing in leaps and bounds but which is also retaining its natural resources through its these parks and other outdoor spaces. Lake Benson Park

Located on 64 acres in the heart of Garner, Lake Benson Park has virtually everything you can think of when it comes to outdoor fun. For one, it’s situated on a lake that offers fishing and boating from mid-March through October each year. It’s also where the annual Fourth of July fireworks celebration is held, complete with a performance from the North Carolina Symphony. The park plays host to additional events throughout the year, including outdoor movies, trick-or-treating at Halloween, the Spring Eggstravaganza each Easter Sunday, and a variety of 5K races. Its paved trail system is ideal for walking, running, or biking along the lake, and its parks have fun for all ages. Taking your pup for a stroll? Stop at the dog park, which is open year-round. Want to see some history? Check out the Garner Veterans Memorial, which was formally dedicated in 2013. Feel like throwing the ball around? There’s so much to do here – and it’s all free and open to the public.

White Deer Park

Right across the street from Lake Benson Park is the newer 96-acre White Deer Park, which includes a nature center and several covered shelters for hosting parties or simply having a picnic. It also features paved trails, some of which connect to Lake Benson Park. The best part about White Deer Park, though, is its LEED-certified nature center, where you can wander around and take a look at both live and preserved nature in its natural habitat. While the park is open seven days a week, the nature center is open Tuesdays through Saturdays throughout the year.

Garner Recreational Park

Across the train tracks in the heart of the Downtown Garner Historic District is the 20-acre Garner Recreational Park. Operated by the town similar to Lake Benson Park and White Deer Park, it features baseball fields with concession stands, more than 2 miles of mountain bike trails, a playground and walking trail access, a picnic shelter, and public restrooms. It’s also home to North Garner Dog Park. Within walking distance is a variety of other fun things to do in Garner, from additional baseball fields to entertainment centers.
